"Mum, I'm scared," my 12-year-old son Liam said on Monday night as I tucked him into bed as the Sydney siege continued.
Surely I'm not the only Sydney parent dealing with a distressed child in the wake of the events of Martin Place. Admittedly I'm a journalist and had the television going much of Monday night, so the terrifying events were there for him to watch as they unfolded. But as I discovered in the school playground this morning, I wasn't the only one awake at all hours following the horror in the Lindt Cafe. The very place my chocoholic son had planned to catch the bus to this Thursday with his friends, to celebrate his first day of the summer school holidays.
